Things You Should Know Before Playing Poker

Poker is a card game that requires a great deal of skill and psychology. Especially at the high stakes tables where the game is played, players must decide when to bluff and when to make value bets in order to maximize their winning potential. There are a few key things you should know before playing poker, though, so that you’re prepared for anything that comes your way.

The basic rules of poker are simple: Each player receives five cards, and the highest hand wins. The cards are ranked from high to low: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, and 9. Some games use multiple packs or add jokers for extra wildness, but the majority of poker variations only contain the standard 52-card deck.

Position is important in poker because it gives you the ability to manipulate the pot on later betting streets. Early positions usually give you less bluff equity, while late positions allow you to play a wider range of hands with more favorable odds of winning. It’s also crucial to pay attention to other players and learn their tendencies. Many poker “tells” don’t come from subtle physical gestures, but rather patterns in how the player bets.

Say you have pocket kings on the flop and it’s A-8-5. This is a pretty good flop for you because your hand strength is concealed and other players will be hard-pressed to put you on a strong pair. However, if the board has tons of straight cards or flushes you should be wary no matter what your pocket hand is.
